THAMMUDU

Produced on Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Pictures banner, "Thammudu", is a love story directed by new comer, Arun Prasad, with Pavan Kalyan in the lead role. More often than not, after a hit film by a hero, the expectations of the audience are raised so high that his next movie is bound to be a disappointment of sorts. But "Thammudu" is an exception. Treading on the heels of "Tholiprema", Pavan Kalyan's second movie, " Thamuudu" does not fall under that ilk .

It is about the rivalry between students of two colleges divided by status and money. The status conscious students of Model College run down the Government College students, for their middle class background. Chakri (Achyuth), a student of the Government College is routed by Model College student, Rohith, in kick-boxing championship. Chakri's brother, Subrahmanyam, alias Subhash, (Pavan Kalyan) is a remiss and a happy go lucky, youngster, who passes time roaming around with friends. His childhood friend, Janaki (Preethi Jinghania), who is in love with him, sometimes helps him out with money necessary for his facade to be well off. He falls in love with Lovely (Adithi), a girl from Model College and sweeps her off her feet, bluffing that he is from a rich family. To demonstrate his affluence he even buys her a diamond ring, with money provided by Janaki. On coming to know of it, Janaki's father, Kutumba Rao (Chandra Mohan), speaks derogatorily to Subhash's father, Viswanath (Raja Krishnamurthy) in front of others. Lovely, who comes to know of it, lashes out at Subhash, while his father throws him out. With his wayward background, Subhash finds it hard to get sympathy or shelter and rues his past behavior. Same time as Chakri goes to meet his repentant brother, Rohith's friends insult Subhash and Chakri thrashes them.

But Rohith and his friends waylay him and thrash him and leave him fatally wounded. This comes as a big blow to the father who was nurturing hopes that Chakri would win the championship in the forthcoming kick-boxing competition. Subhash, desirous of making his father's dreams come true, practices the sport vigorously. At the same time he recognizes Janaki's love for him. The movie ends on a happy note with Subhash winning the boxing championship and joining his true love, Janaki.

Rating :

Excellent storyline, coupled with the skillful handling of the director, in his very first venture, supported by the brilliant performance of Pavan Kalyan, contributes to the success of the movie, which is a good entertainer too. It is sure to be a crowd-puller and a sure hit with youth in particular. Though the story is similar to that of the Hindi movie, "Jo Jeetha Vohi Sikander", the director's adeptness does not let this enter the minds of the audience and cast its shadow on the movie. The situations portraying Subhash's waywardness provide neat entertainment to the audience and the climax is quite gripping. Pavan Kalyan proved his acting prowess by more than matching his role, which had great potential and provided him the plank. He is particularly impressive in the scene where Subhash bluffs Lovely over phone. The leading ladies proved to be a liability to the movie, though. Music score by Ramana Gogula is melodious and conversations by Chinthapally Ramana are in tune with the movie. Noted cameraman, Madhu Ambat's skills are an added special attraction. All in all, the movie has brought out the potential actor in Pavan Kalyan and introduced a good director to the Telugu filmdom.
